What is HD Freeview television
Ofcom announced in April 2008 that we could expect four channels to be transmitted in high definition over the Freeview platform received via a Freeview compatible TV aerial.
What channels will be available in HD on freeview
BBC HD is available now.
BBC1 HD available now.
ITV 1 HD available now.
Channel 4 HD available now.
SC4 HD Wales only.
When will Freeview HD be available to me?
Within our coverage area of London and the south east of the UK, Freeview HD will not fully be available until 2012 in line with the 'digital switchover'. Crystal Palace, the main London Freeview transmitter, is currently broadcasting HD Freeview so those receiving Freeview from this transmitter are able to get HD Freeview now (not in all areas).
Will my TV or set top box work with Freeview HD?
Freeview HD uses DVB-T2 high definition standard and Mpeg 4 decoding.
HD TV's
HD TVs with built in Freeview tuners capable of receiving Freeview HD only started appearing on the market earlier last year.
If you are upgrading your TV in the near future and want to be able to use it for Freeview HD, make sure it is compatible with these standards. The choice is limited at present; however we expect more compatible TVs to be available this year. The alternative is to add a HD Freeview compatible set top box to your existing HD TV.
Set top boxes
DVB-T2 compatible HD set top boxes are now widely available. Our favourite of these is the Humax Fox T2. Humax may not yet be a household name but we have used their satellite receivers for some time and have found them to be very reliable and very good value for money.
Will my existing Freeview aerial work with HD Freeview?
Providing your existing aerial works now with all the Freeview channels it should be fine for Freeview HD post 2012 and if you are receiving your Freeview channels from the Crystal Palace transmitter then the aerial should receive the HD channels now in many areas.
Dont want to wait until 2012 for Freeview HD?
You could consider obtaining HD TV now from a satellite dish using Sky or for free from BBC freesat or in some cases you may be able to switch to receive your aerial signals from the Crystal Palace transmitter.
